Advanced Scar Work

</p>

Did you know that scars can contribute to significant movement dysfunction and compensation patterns?

For example, during abdominal surgeries such as a C-section or appendectomy, layers of abdominal fascia and muscle are affected. The resulting restrictions can alter how the nervous system accesses and recruits the core musculature. Over time, this may contribute to compensation patterns in areas such as the low back, hips, or pelvis.

This is not limited to surgical scars. Scars from injuries, burns, cuts, or trauma can create similar restrictions and functional changes within the body.

Neurokinetic Therapy® (NKT) and Scar Work

NeuroKinetic Therapy® is an advanced form of manual therapy that assesses how the brain is controlling movement patterns throughout the body. Within this approach, scars are often prioritized due to their potential influence on neuromuscular compensation.

During an NKT® assessment, we determine:

  • Whether a scar is contributing to dysfunctional movement patterns
  • Which muscles or movement patterns may be inhibited or compensated for
  • Appropriate corrective or home exercise strategies to support your primary concern (such as low back, hip, or neck pain)

This approach allows for a highly targeted assessment and treatment strategy based on individual presentation.

Common Compensation Patterns Observed

Through advanced NKT® assessment, a wide range of compensation patterns may be identified, including:

  • Facial scars contributing to neck, shoulder, or upper back tension
  • Abdominal scars (e.g., appendectomy, C-section, gallbladder surgery) linked to low back, hip, or leg dysfunction
  • Arm scars influencing shoulder or neck pain
  • Leg scars affecting hip, SI joint, or low back mechanics
  • Mastectomy or chest scars contributing to upper back and neck tension

Augmenting Scar Work with Dolphin MPS

After years of clinical experience working with scars using NeuroKinetic Therapy®, Dolphin Neurostim (MPS) has been integrated to further support treatment outcomes.

The Dolphin device assists in addressing soft tissue and neural components of scar tissue, complementing manual therapy techniques. The combined approach allows for a more comprehensive strategy in addressing scar-related restrictions and movement dysfunction.
