TMJ Disorder

Massage Therapy for TMJ Disorders

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, refers to the jaw joint and surrounding muscles involved in chewing, speaking, and jaw movement. TMJ dysfunction can contribute to symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, facial tension, and difficulty opening the mouth comfortably.

While many therapists focus only on the external jaw muscles, several important muscles involved in jaw function are located inside the mouth. Rebecca has completed additional post-graduate training in intra-oral massage therapy techniques. This allows her to more comprehensively address TMJ dysfunction.

Her TMJ treatments may include a combination of:

  • Soft tissue release techniques for the external jaw muscles
  • Intra-oral treatment to address deeper internal jaw muscles
  • NeuroKinetic Therapy® (NKT®) assessment and treatment to address underlying compensation patterns
  • Dolphin MPS to stimulate acupuncture and therapeutic treatment points associated with jaw dysfunction and pain

NeuroKinetic Therapy® (NKT®) for TMJ Dysfunction

NeuroKinetic Therapy® (NKT®) is an advanced corrective therapy approach that focuses on identifying underlying compensation patterns contributing to pain and dysfunction.

Within NKT®, the jaw is considered a key area of assessment. Dysfunctions involving the TMJ can influence muscle function throughout the neck, shoulders, and even the rest of the body. By identifying and addressing these compensation patterns, treatment aims to reduce unnecessary muscular overactivity and restore more efficient movement patterns.

Dolphin MPS for TMJ Dysfunction

Dolphin Neurostim MPS can be an excellent adjunctive treatment for TMJ dysfunction and chronic jaw tension. This gentle microcurrent therapy is used to help calm the nervous system, decrease muscular guarding, and address chronic pain patterns associated with the jaw, face, head, and neck.

Treatment may involve applying Dolphin MPS to areas such as:

  • The jaw and facial muscles
  • TMJ-related acupuncture and trigger points
  • The neck and upper shoulder region
  • Scar tissue or areas of chronic tension contributing to compensation patterns

Many clients find that incorporating Dolphin MPS into TMJ treatment helps decrease jaw tension, improve relaxation, and reduce associated symptoms such as headaches, facial pain, and neck tightness.
