Massage for TMJ Disorders
The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the medical term for the jaw. People with TMJ Dysfunction can have pain, popping, or clicking of the jaw. Some people can’t even open their mouth wide enough to take a large bite out of a sandwich or burger! Obviously when the dysfunction gets to that point it can really affect quality of life.
Many therapists only treat the external jaw muscles found around the jaw. However, there are several muscles that are only accessible inside the mouth. I have taken additional post grad courses learning how to most effectively address these intra-oral muscles. Addressing all of the jaw muscles can really help get you out of pain faster. And don’t worry, I always work within your comfort tolerance and am very gentle when working intra-orally.
Massage for Headaches
Chronic headaches can be debilitating. There are several muscles in the neck, at the base of the skull and in the jaw that can contribute to tension headaches and migraines. Having these muscles worked by a skilled therapist can decrease the frequency and intensity of your symptoms. In many cases, people who stay on top of their neck tension are able to stave off headaches altogether.
Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) for TMJ Disorder and Headaches
NKT is my favorite modality for treating tough conditions. In NKT the therapist finds the underlying compensation patterns that lead to your pain. By addressing the problem at the root there is better resolution of the problem.
NKT highly prioritizes the jaw. In NKT we recognize that dysfunctions in the jaw can have a global effect on the rest of the body. By addressing these underlying compensations, it allows the jaw to stop overworking.
The same approach can be applied to the neck muscles in headache treatments.
