Neurokinetic Therapy® (NKT)

NeuroKinetic Therapy® (NKT®) is an advanced form of corrective manual therapy. It assesses how the brain and nervous system coordinate movement throughout the body.

When an injury, scar, or chronic pain pattern develops, the body often creates compensations. As a result some muscles become overactive and tight from overworking, while others become inhibited and underactive. Over time, these dysfunctional movement patterns can contribute to pain, tension, reduced mobility, and recurring symptoms.

Using a series of precise muscle testing protocols, NKT® helps identify these compensation patterns and determine the relationship between the primary dysfunction and the areas that are compensating for it.

Once these patterns are identified, treatment focuses on:

  • Releasing overactive compensatory muscles
  • Activating inhibited muscles that are not functioning optimally
  • Improving communication between the nervous system and muscular system
  • Restoring more efficient movement patterns throughout the body

Because NKT® is highly specific and individualized, many patients report faster and longer-lasting results compared to approaches that focus only on the area of pain itself.

By addressing the underlying compensation patterns, treatment may help improve range of motion, decrease pain, enhance stability, and support more efficient movement and posture.

Rebecca’s Neurokinetic Therapy® Journey

In 2017, Rebecca reduced her clinical hours due to a persistent neck injury related to an old whiplash trauma.

Despite receiving regular treatment and trying a wide range of therapies — including traditional massage therapy, chiropractic care, physiotherapy, osteopathy, and acupuncture — the relief was often short-lived, with symptoms returning shortly after treatment.

After hearing about NeuroKinetic Therapy®, Rebecca decided to explore the approach herself. Following just a few sessions, she experienced significant improvement in her symptoms.

Inspired by the results, Rebecca pursued formal NKT® training so she could offer the same approach to her own patients. Less than two years later, she achieved Level 3 certification, the highest level of training currently available within NeuroKinetic Therapy®.

As of this writing, Rebecca remains the only advanced NKT® practitioner in the Sudbury area.

How NeuroKinetic Therapy® Works with Other Treatment Modalities

One of the biggest advantages of NeuroKinetic Therapy® (NKT®) is how well it integrates with other therapeutic modalities. Because NKT® focuses on identifying the underlying compensation patterns contributing to pain and dysfunction, it helps guide the rest of the treatment session with greater precision.

Firstly, NKT® helps determine which muscles are overworking and which muscles are inhibited. Then, additional treatment techniques can target those findings more effectively. As a result, treatments become more individualized and functional.

Rebecca frequently combines NKT® with several advanced therapeutic modalities, including:

1. Dolphin Neurostim MPS

Dolphin MPS works exceptionally well alongside NKT® because it helps calm the nervous system while reducing chronic muscular guarding and pain patterns. After identifying dysfunctional compensation patterns through NKT®, Dolphin MPS can help decrease neurological stress and improve muscle activation.

Additionally, Dolphin MPS may help support:

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • TMJ dysfunction
  • Scar-related compensations
  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Persistent muscular tension patterns

Therefore, combining NKT® and Dolphin MPS often creates a more comprehensive treatment approach for chronic pain conditions.

2. Scar Release Therapy

Scars can create significant compensation patterns throughout the body. For example, abdominal scars may contribute to low back pain, while facial scars may affect jaw and neck function.

NKT® helps identify whether a scar is contributing to dysfunction. Then, Dolphin MPS scar release techniques and soft tissue therapy can help address the restriction more directly. As a result, patients often experience improved mobility, muscle activation, and pain reduction.

3. Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy also integrates very well with NKT® treatments. Once NKT® identifies areas of overcompensation or tissue restriction, cupping can help decrease fascial tension in those areas. Because of this, cupping often enhances the overall effectiveness of corrective treatment sessions.

4. Soft Tissue Therapy & Stretching Techniques

NKT® assessments help determine where soft tissue release and stretching techniques will have the greatest therapeutic effect. Rather than treating only the area of pain, treatment focuses on the underlying dysfunctional movement pattern contributing to the problem.

Therefore, techniques such as trigger point release, pin-and-stretch, and advanced stretching methods become more targeted and effective.

Can I Receive an RMT Receipt for NKT® Treatments?

Absolutely. NeuroKinetic Therapy® falls within the Scope of Practice of massage therapy, and treatments are provided by a Registered Massage Therapist. You will receive an RMT receipt for insurance and extended health benefit purposes.
