Cupping is one of my favourite techniques to incorporate into therapeutic treatments, as it can significantly enhance the effectiveness of a session when used appropriately.
Using gentle vacuum suction, the cups help lift and decompress tissues, creating a different effect than traditional hands-on pressure alone. Cupping can be integrated into treatment to help address soft tissue restrictions, fascial tension, and movement limitations.
Potential Benefits of Cupping Massage
Cupping therapy may help:
- Address adhesions and scar tissue
- Improve range of motion and tissue mobility
- Decrease muscular and fascial tension
- Promote circulation to targeted areas
- Create a deep sense of relaxation
Important Risks and Considerations
Cupping is not appropriate for everyone and tends to be best suited for individuals who enjoy a deeper or more intensive style of treatment.
Because the cups create suction on the skin, temporary circular marks are a common and expected side effect. These marks are similar in appearance to a “hickey” and are not typically painful. They usually fade within approximately 5–14 days, depending on skin tone, tissue response, and treatment intensity.
Many people are familiar with these marks from athletes such as Michael Phelps, who helped bring cupping therapy into the public eye.
It is important to understand and feel comfortable with this potential side effect prior to booking a treatment involving cupping therapy.
