Women’s Health Issues

My advanced training in Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) allows me to better assist people with a myriad of women’s health issues.

NKT is all about finding compensation patterns.  In the advanced NKT coursework we learn to work with compensation patterns involving the pelvic floor, scars, and ligaments. This knowledge is instrumental in assisting women after events such as a natural child birth, c-sections, mastectomies and other female-specific surgeries (i.e. breast reductions/augmentations, hysterectomies, etc.).

Women’s Health and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

In NKT we recognize that the pelvic floor is a part of the intrinsic core system.  When there is dysfunction in the intrinsic core system you become more vulnerable to pain in the low back, hips and legs. This is why pelvic floor problems can have such far reaching effects. It is not only your pelvic floor that is dysfunctional, you often experience pain in these other areas as well.

As an RMT I do not do internal pelvic floor work.  For that you would have to go to a specialized pelvic floor physio.  But what I can do through NKT testing is determine the exact compensations your pelvic floor dysfunction is causing. Armed with that information I can then assign stretches and gentle strengthening targeted for your exact compensations.

Many patients don’t realize that the pain they are experiencing today in their low back or hips can actually be traced back to a pelvic floor dysfunction from when they gave birth.  This is a great thing to get assessed if you have ever given birth naturally, even if it was years ago.

Women’s Health and Compensations from Surgical Scars

In NKT we realize that surgical scars can cause a lot of compensations and dysfunction.

There are many female-specific surgeries that can cause a lot of compensations and dysfunction. If we take C-sections as an example the surgeon must cut through the abdominal muscles.  The net result is the abdominal muscles become inefficient and other structures, such as the low back or hips, start to become strained.  This compensation can lead to pain even years after the birth.

This same principle applies for any scar.  The scarred area becomes dysfunctional and nearby structures take the brunt.

I work on scars of all kinds every day in my massage practice.  They all cause dysfunction.  However, the two surgical scars that cause my patients the most dysfunction are hands down c-section scars and mastectomy scars.  This is for two reasons: A) these scars are on the trunk thus they downregulate core muscles, which are arguably the most important muscles in the body and B) these scars tend to be larger than many other surgical scars.  This is why it is so important for women especially to have their scars assessed.

NKT and Post Natal Recovery

Another thing that NKT prioritizes is the compensations ligaments can cause.  This is particularly important in post-natal recovery.

As everyone knows bringing a baby into the world is hard on a mother’s body.  What many ppl don’t understand is the role pelvic ligaments can play in this process.

During pregnancy the pelvis is stretched to the max.  As a result, some ligaments will become dysfunctional.   Once this happens then nearby muscles will pick up the slack and become painful.  Once it is safe to work on your ligaments this can be corrected via NKT.

In Conclusion

NKT is a wonderful modality for women in pain. It is a beautiful way to get to the root of pain caused by a myriad female specific issues/surgeries.
